Job Description

A leading HR consulting firm in Washington, D.C., is seeking a temporary-to-hire HR Manager with previous nonprofit experience to support employee relations, leave management, and a multi-state client portfolio. In this role, you will handle complex HR needs, such as balancing business initiatives with employee experience, navigating complex interpersonal dynamics, generating reports on leave usage and trends, and monitoring leave policies and procedures. The ideal candidate is calm under pressure, a solution-oriented thinker, and can apply laws to the workplace in order to maintain compliance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with clients regarding implementing best practices for leave management-related HR policies and procedures, ensuring alignment with legal requirements. Including but not limited to, long-term and short-term requests and coordinating with external agencies.
  • Generate reports for leave management and maintain accurate records.
  • Upload forms and manage files within the talent acquisition system.
  • Be an educated advisor on employee relations protocols. Maintain accurate policies regarding workplace behavior, ensuring compliance and managing risks. Be a neutral party, facilitating productive communication across various departmental levels.
  • Edit and update employee records, including salary adjustments, address and name changes, and other relevant updates.
  • Ensure compliance with employment laws and company policies.
  • Respond to inquiries related to general HR matters with high-profile clients.
  • Serve as a key liaison between internal and external contacts to support efficient HR business practices.

Why You’ll Love Working Here:

  • Be part of a growing, innovative HR firm with a collaborative and dynamic culture.
  • Enjoy a fully remote-heavy environment.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Experienced. You bring at least five years of HR experience working in a nonprofit, with a focus on leave management, employee relations, and compliance across domestic multi-state support.
  • Reliable and self-sufficient. You thrive in a remote setting and can manage daily HR tasks, multiple client needs, and ad hoc requests with confidence.
  • Empathetic conflict resolver. You approach sensitive situations with discretion, professionalism, and strong people skills.
  • Tech-savvy. You are comfortable working with HRIS platforms, applicant tracking systems, and remote collaboration tools to streamline HR processes.
  • Strong problem-solver. You proactively identify HR issues, think critically, and implement effective solutions that align with company policies and best practices.
  • Legally knowledgeable. You stay up-to-date on federal and state employment laws and how they apply to the HR world.

Essential to Hawthorne Lane’s success is our ability to attract talent from a range of backgrounds. Our network reflects the diverse community around us, and we believe in a workplace where everyone feels valued and empowered to succeed.
