Nonprofit Chief Executive Officer

Houston, TX

Our client, a Houston non-profit organization that assists adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, has an opportunity available for a Chief Executive Officer. Reporting to the Board, this CEO is responsible for ensuring the mission and vision of the organization is realized, based on the goals set forth in the strategic plan.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Board support & strategic planning:

  • Facilitate the board to develop and implement a strategic plan, obtaining input from stakeholders, developing measurable goals and priorities, and monitoring progress.
  • Attend and fully participate, as a non-voting member, in all board meetings and board committee meetings.
  • Assist the board governance committee with board member recruitment, orientation, training, and ongoing support.
  • Assist the board development committee with identifying and developing relationships with foundations and corporations; prepare grants and respond to proposals.
  • Assist the board fundraising committee with annual fundraisers.
  • Assist the board financial committee with developing and implementing a financial plan for the organization’s future, annual budgeting, and audit/review prep.

Finance:

  • Oversee all aspects of the organization’s finances including annual budget, investments, financial reporting, internal controls, staff salaries, banking, billing, and developing long- and short-term financial plans.
  • Prepare annually for a successful financial audit or review.
  • Develop new funding streams and donors to match budget needs, including capital campaigns as needed.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor an annual risk management plan.

Operations:

  • Develop and review policies and procedures as needed based on the needs of the organization.
  • Ensure that the organization meets all requirements for accreditation and licensing and follows all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor organizational plans for diversity, technology, and accessibility.
  • In conjunction with the COO, develop, implement, and monitor a comprehensive health and safety program, including applicable policies and procedures, staff training, member/client training, inspections, and tests of emergency procedures.
  • Ensure that an up-to-date succession plan or cross training is in place for all key positions.

Ensure Mission Driven Services:

  • Develop staffing plan, and hire/train personnel needed to achieve the mission.
  • Evaluate all programs to ensure they are expressly aligned with the organization’s vision and mission and are sustainable.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive performance measurement and improvement (outcomes) system.
  • Remain knowledgeable of national/state/local trends, events, disruptions, and changes that might impact members/clients or the mission of the organization.
  • Act as a spokesperson for the organization to its constituents, media, and the general public.
  • Provide tours and informational sessions for potential members/clients; schools; funders, and other community organizations.
  • Respond to stakeholder concerns and complaints (informal and formal)

Human Resources:

  • Directly supervise and support executive/director level employees
  • Ensure all legal requirements related to human resources are implemented, including LEIEs checks, background checks, E-Verify, driving record checks, credential checks, and vehicle insurance checks.
  • Ensure that all new hires have an appropriate orientation and set up a complete HR file.
  • Ensure all positions have an up-to-date job description and that all employees receive timely performance reviews.
  • Respond to employee concerns and complaints (informal and formal).

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree and at least 5 years of experience in nonprofit management or Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of experience in nonprofit management. Experience with individuals with IDD is strongly preferred.
  • Understanding of Texas Workforce Commission and obtain/hold a UNT Director credential.
  • Excellent organization, planning, and communication skills.
  • Experience in grant writing, budgeting, fundraising, human resources, strategic planning, risk management, policy development, and performance outcomes systems.
  • Familiarity with Quickbooks, ADP, E-verify, online background checks, Microsoft office, Google, insurance negotiation and reporting, benefit packages reporting, and audit preparation
  • Prefer experience with CARF or other best practice accreditation organization.
  • Experience with supervising/mentoring others.
  • Clean DMV record, valid Texas State driver’s license
  • Able to pass drug test and background check
