The Pine Barrens Tribune newspaper has a need for an on-call general assignment/features reporter to report on occasion, on an as-needed basis, for the newspaper.
We’re looking for a reporter with a very flexible schedule – who we can add to a call list to take on assignments, every now and then, as they come up. This is an ideal position for a recent journalism graduate looking to further their experience, or for a print journalist looking to earn supplemental income when opportunities are available!
The successful candidate is committed to uncovering and reporting the facts, with integrity above all else, thoroughly researches and collects all pertinent information, and must be a dynamic communicator who can write copy clearly, cleanly, and accurately, as well as strives to deliver impactful journalism.
While, at times, in-person attendance at functions or interviewing is required, writing can be done from home and editing/review of copy can be accomplished via virtual platforms, via email.
Requirements:
· Superior reporting and interviewing skills
· Effective communication and interpersonal skills
· Capability to provide timely explanatory pieces in AP-style
· Ability to write copy following the inverted pyramid
· Availability to attend in-person functions and respond at a moment’s notice
· Knowledge of the South Jersey and Pinelands area
· Deadline-driven
· Willing to work nights, weekends and holidays
· Experienced in rounding out stories with depth and context
· Keen interest in government and politics, as well as community reporting
· Amenable to having copy edited
· Willingness to take photos to accompany a story and/or gather necessary images, as well as knowledge of how to work a camera
· Highly organized and detail oriented
· Efficient typing skills
· Ability to use a computer, email, virtual communication platforms and web camera/mic
· Reliable internet connection, phone/text messaging capability
This is a position that requires journalism fundamentals, such as on-scene/telephone interviewing, unabated accuracy and adherence to deadlines. The successful candidate must be open to having their copy edited, though should thoroughly review their own copy before filing.
