JOB SUMMARY: The Phlebotomist is the Department's primary support system and is responsible for procuring blood samples from patients, for preserving the integrity of specimens and for proper processing and preparation of all samples. Sample collection is performed on patients of all ages including neonates, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric. Additionally the Phlebotomist will provide computer receipt of specimens and various computer/clerical support functions such as answering telephone inquiries from other departments of the facility and assisting with outpatients.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Responsible for obtaining blood sample specimens by venipuncture or capillary methods according to established protocols. Collection of urine samples from inpatients, outpatients, and drug screen candidates.
2. Responsible for handling all inquiries for Lab results, specimen status and general information regarding the Department and department protocol.
3. Works with co workers as a team to meet the needs of the department for efficient work flow.
4. Reviews lab status report several times during the shift and prior to the end of the shift for pending orders.
5. Answers telephones promptly and courteously, identifying his/her self and department.
6. Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.
7. Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized punch time system correctly.
8. Attends annual review and department in-services, as scheduled.
9. Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
10. Adapts to a constantly changing environment by recognizing opportunities for improvement and embracing change to bring about improvements. Exercises independent thinking, judgement, and decision - making and accepts accountability and responsibility for decisions and consequences.
11. Complies with all policies, procedures, and related protocols as established by the department and/or the organization.
12. Delivery of samples and requests to designated areas of the laboratory.
13. May perform other duties related to specimen collection or the courier service as assigned.
14. Maintain good public relations at all times.
15. Responsible for proper documentation of collection and quality assurance procedures including chain of custody protocol.
16. Trains new employees and students. Cross-trains employees.
17. Maintain regular attendance.
18. Performs all other duties as assigned or required.
