Our first product is a general-purpose insectoid designed for work in vast swarms for operation in extreme environments. Over the coming century, our systems will build the critical infrastructure needed for humanity's expansion across the Milky Way.

Opportunity

Define hardware strategy and lead the architecture, design, and realization for our general-purpose insectoids, built for Earth's harshest environments and off-world deployment. As a founding team member in this ground-floor role, you will have significant ownership. You will solve core mechatronics challenges in mobility, manipulation integration, robustness, and power systems enabling autonomous swarms in unstructured environments. We seek experienced hardware builders driven by these technical challenges.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical and electro-mechanical design, analysis, and integration for GRAM's hexapedal robotic platform.
• Design core robotic systems including structure, limbs, actuation, power, sensing, and drive component selection based on system requirements.
• Own the hardware development lifecycle, emphasizing system architecture, rapid prototyping, DFM/A/R for harsh environments, and vendor management.
• Develop and execute comprehensive hardware test plans covering functional, environmental, and reliability specifications.
• Drive the hardware technology roadmap, establish core engineering standards and practices, and help build the engineering team through mentorship.

Minimum Qualifications

• MS degree in Mechatronics, Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years successfully designing, building, and validating robotics hardware.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD, engineering simulation including FEA, MBD, and Thermal analysis, plus hands-on execution covering prototyping, fabrication, assembly, and debug.
• Experience integrating actuators, sensors, and power systems within mobile robots.
• Experience designing dynamic mechanisms, such as robotic limbs or joints.

Preferred Qualifications

• PhD in a relevant engineering field.
• Direct experience building dynamic legged robots operated successfully in unstructured environments.
• Experience designing hardware resilient to harsh environments, considering factors like sealing, thermal range, shock, and vibration.
• Specialized expertise relevant to dynamic mobile robots (e.g., actuators, power electronics, thermal management, reliability).
• Experience leading hardware or mechatronics projects and making key architectural decisions.
• Demonstrated success applying hardware-software co-design principles to dynamic robotic systems.
