Job Title: Traveling Project Manager – Heavy Highway/Heavy Civil Construction

Location: Based in Nebraska – Projects Throughout the Midwest

Travel Required: 80–100% (Project-Based Travel)

Employment Type: Full-Time

Position Overview

As a Traveling Project Manager , you’ll be the boots-on-the-ground leader ensuring that multi-million-dollar infrastructure projects are delivered on time, on budget, and up to spec . You’ll oversee field operations, manage subcontractors, monitor schedules and costs, and maintain tight control over safety and quality.

You won’t be sitting behind a desk — you’ll live where the work is, directing project execution, building high-performing crews, and making real-time decisions that keep the job moving forward.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage civil and highway construction projects from start to finish
  • Oversee field crews, subcontractors, and suppliers
  • Develop and maintain project schedules and cost forecasts
  • Ensure compliance with DOT specs, safety regulations, and QA/QC standards
  • Collaborate with estimators, engineers, and owners to solve field issues in real-time
  • Review and approve submittals, RFI responses, and change orders
  • Track daily reports, work logs, and job costs using project management software
  • Conduct on-site meetings with stakeholders, inspectors, and local agencies
  • Travel to and manage multiple project sites as needed

Qualifications

  • 10+ years' experience in heavy civil/heavy highway construction (bridges, roads, utilities, earthwork, etc.)
  • Proven track record managing projects from mobilization to close-out
  • Strong knowledge of DOT specifications and construction best practices
  • Skilled in scheduling (Primavera, MS Project, or equivalent) and cost tracking
  • Able to read and interpret civil blueprints, specs, and shop drawings
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Comfortable working in remote jobsite environments with extended travel
  • Proficiency with construction management software (e.g., HCSS, Procore, or similar)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or equivalent preferred (not required)
