At Maze of Life Resource Center, it is our purpose to assist those who find themselves on an arduous path in life and offer positive support systems and programs to help them avoid the pit-falls that can derail their journey.

YOUTH MENTOR

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Youth Mentor to join our team in support of the Denton County Probation Department. This role is crucial in providing guidance, support, and encouragement to at-risk youth involved in the probation system. The Youth Mentor will play an instrumental role in fostering positive relationships with young individuals, helping them navigate the challenges they face while promoting personal growth and resilience. This involves working closely with youth to develop life skills, set achievable goals, and provide mentorship that empowers them to make informed decisions. This role requires a commitment to building positive relationships and a deep understanding of the needs and aspirations of young people.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field preferred.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Valid driver's license, reliable transportation and proof of insurance.
  • Minimum of one (1) year working with youth.
  • Passion for working with youth and making a positive difference.
  • Ability to relate to and build rapport with young people from diverse backgrounds
  • Reliable transportation and availability to meet regularly with mentees
  • Ability to pass a background check, finger printing and reference checks.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.

PREFERRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE

  • 4 opportunities available: Require 1 bilingual Spanish & English and 1 bilingual Hakha Chin & English
  • Experience in education, social work, counseling, or youth development
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care or mentoring best practices
  • Familiarity with the challenges faced by at-risk or under-resourced youth

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop trusting, supportive relationships with assigned mentees.
  • Meet regularly with mentees (weekly or biweekly) for check-ins, activities, or discussions.
  • Help mentees set personal, academic, or career goals and track progress.
  • Provide guidance on life skills, such as communication, decision-making, conflict resolution, emotional regulation and time management.
  • Promote positive behaviors and discourage risky or harmful choices.
  • Collaborate with staff, families, and community partners to support mentee growth.
  • Attend mentor training, supervision meetings, and program events.
  • Submit timely reports, attendance logs, and progress updates as required.
  • Uphold confidentiality, ethical standards, and program policies at all times.
  • Assist youth in identifying and accessing community resources, educational opportunities, and vocational training.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development to enhance mentoring skills and stay informed about best practices.
